Girls Emerging: A Glimpse Into Hope, Hugs, and Honest Conversations.
When conversations about feminism began to gain momentum, a subtle narrative emerged—one that sometimes suggested women had to choose between ambition and relationships. For a long time, the scales of attention tilted heavily in favor of the male child. More recently, there’s been a strong societal push to support the girl child, which is necessary, but balance is key.
Girls Emerging is our way of bridging that gap. It’s not a battle of the sexes, it’s about equity in possibility. It’s about showing them that dreaming isn’t gendered. Just as boys are taught to aspire, girls must be encouraged to explore, believe, and become.
On May 22, 2024, we had the joy of reaching over 700+ girls at Simawa Community High School, and what a day it was.
One of our favorite moments from the event was watching the girls show up and fully engage. They were eager, responsive, and brimming with curiosity.
But there was something we didn’t quite anticipate—a communication gap. Since the sessions were hosted within a school environment, we assumed that most of the students, especially the seniors, would easily understand the language and terms we used. However, a subtle language barrier emerged, prompting us to pivot on the spot.
Our keynote speaker had to adjust her tone and vocabulary, breaking concepts down further to ensure every girl understood. It was a humbling reminder that effective communication always meets people where they are.
And then came that moment; the one that’s still impressed in our hearts. A wave of warm hugs came flooding in. Every single girl wanted a moment to embrace the speaker, to connect with the team. They felt noticed. They felt seen. They had fun. They experienced something new.
Our hearts were full. That spontaneous outpouring of affection? It reminded us just how powerful presence truly is. The girls weren’t only excited about the sanitary pads, snacks, popcorn, or the dance breaks. What truly touched them was the attention. The music. The conversations. The teachers danced with them. The laughter. All of it came together to create a space filled with joy, affirmation, and freedom. And then there were the talent moments, girls rapping, one sketching a beautiful drawing in under 15 minutes, pouring her creativity into a gift for Cheers Global.
That kind of unfiltered expression moved us deeply. It reminded us why this vision is still worth pursuing.
Planning an event like this comes with its fair share of unpredictability. But truthfully, nothing caught us off guard, we came prepared for the unexpected. Still, the experience left us with deeper insights than we could have imagined. We learned that vision alone isn’t enough. You need a team that shares your passion. Even if your values or beliefs differ, unity around a common purpose creates something extraordinary.
Most of all, we were reminded of a simple truth: people want to feel seen, loved, and needed. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to light a spark. The truth remains that challenges are universal, their weight varies depending on your circumstances. Just because you’re doing okay, or struggling, doesn’t mean your experience mirrors someone else’s. Seeing those girls, hearing their stories, and visiting their school ignited a renewed sense of purpose.
Girls Emerging is a movement; a commitment to nurturing dreams, one girl at a time.
And if all it takes is a hug, a conversation, or a dance party to remind a girl that she matters, then that’s exactly what we’ll keep doing.
