Cheerleaders’ Diary

How Dominion Went From Spectator to Cheerleader Behind the Camera

Cheers Global

Cheerleaders’ Diary

Dominion Ojonoka David · Redemption City, Ogun State

Where it began

At a Back to School outreach in Redemption City, I watched primary and secondary school children receive bags and some other school items, and I assumed my church had organised it. It was only later that I learned the people behind it were Cheers Global, an NGO I had never heard of.

There was also a letter-writing competition that day, and some of the children won sponsorship toward their school fees. I remember thinking how rare it is to see help reach exactly where it’s needed. That feeling stayed with me, and soon after I became a volunteer on the media team, creating content strategies and covering events so the work could be seen and shared.

A moment I’ll never forget

Of everything I’ve covered, Girls Emerging at a school in Shimawa stands out most. Our executive lead, Mrs Olajumoke, didn’t speak to the girls like a professional addressing an audience. She came down to their level and used words and examples they understood.

She and the team danced with the girls, hugged them, and shared sanitary pads and snacks, all to remind them that being a girl is something to celebrate. The girls were told that their minds are their greatest asset and that they can dream as far as they choose. I was behind the camera, but those words encouraged me too, and everyone in the room.

The team behind the cheer

To Mrs Olajumoke and the entire Cheers Global team, thank you. Your warmth and commitment, and your willingness to show up for children and girls again and again, taught me what service looks like.

Volunteering showed me that cheering people on doesn’t require grand means. I may not have everything, but there are small ways I can bring joy to someone’s day.

To the next Cheerleader

If you’re thinking of becoming a Cheerleader, be ready to put in the work. Be open to correction, and open to the impact it will have on you. Give your best, and enjoy it.

And don’t wait for an event or an initiative to bring cheer. Be cheerful in your own way, every day, because the world needs more light.

This is my Cheerleader’s Diary.
